Let's talk Eid Makeup & the Muslim Social Accounts you HAVE to Follow!

Ramadan Mubarak! I hope everyone partaking in Ramadan has a beautiful month of self reflection, compassion, empathy and healing. 

First things first, I want to address how hard it is to search ‘EID makeup looks’ in Pinterest. The majority of images that appear are white women wearing a ‘smokey Arabic eye’. From the appropriation to the straight up exclusion of various POC Muslim women, this was a HUGE disappointment, especially coming from a platform as big as Pinterest. That is not to say you can’t find various images of POC Muslim women on the platform, however you always have to preface your search with ‘black woman’ or ‘brown woman’ at the end of it, for example ‘hijab style black woman’. If you only put in ‘hijab style’, again the front page mostly filters to images of white women.

I have to say the whole ‘EID makeup look’ Pinterest search was really triggering for me. Growing up in a South Asian (Bengali) Muslim household and being part of the Muslim community in (Brisbane) Australia, I ONLY ever saw people of colour in the community. So to be erased from a simple search term is extremely hurtful and is frankly misrepresentation in its messiest form.

With all that said and done, I do want to shift the focus and showcase/introduce you to some of my favourite Muslim women of colour in the beauty and creative spaces.

With it being the month of Ramadan, I know a lot of us are already pinning and saving inspo for our EID outfits and makeup looks. An amazing Muslim beauty guru/makeup artist that will having you archiving her entire account is @Urgalsal. Her platform has everything form abstract intricate makeup, beautiful graphic line work and also soft minimal makeup. Meaning you’ll be able to find something that tickles your fancy.

@Rakayaesime

If ‘words of affirmation’ are your love language, then you will fall head over heels for the Muslim poet @Rakayesime. Her ability to piece words together and express exactly what you are feeling is pure magic.

@Rawdis

For our fashionistas with a little flavour, you’ll be thanking me for introducing you to @Rawdis. Just from a glance you think @Rawdis is just a high fashion model and stylist, HOWEVER the most appealing and entertaining part of her platform is her feel good comedic energy! She’ll have you giggling and inspiring your fits all in one!  

@Muslim

As far as a big all-encompassing platform that hits the nail on the head for diversity and representation in the Muslim community, then @Muslim is a social account you HAVE to follow. The account focuses on easy digestible education, hilarious comedy skits and showcases an array of talented Muslims from various backgrounds and industries.
